We are no longer on Moore's Law. According to research from organizations like METR, AI capability for certain tasks has recently been doubling every six to seven months [3]. It's important to approach this data with caution. As MIT Technology Review notes, this specific metric has significant limitations and is often misunderstood [3]. It measures performance on a particular set of tasks, and it is not a universal law. Still, the trend it points to is a signal you can't unsee once you've seen it.
This is a pace of change that human intuition is simply not equipped to grasp. This is why I think many predictions about AI fall short - they are based on linear extrapolation, when the underlying dynamic appears to be fundamentally non-linear.
If we were to speculatively extrapolate this trend, the progression could look something like this. This is a significant assumption, as even the researchers at METR express uncertainty about whether this pace will hold for longer-horizon tasks, but it serves as a powerful illustration of the potential trajectory:

The Great Role Transformation (2026-2027)
As AI capabilities advance, I expect to see a significant transformation in professional roles. This isn't about replacing jobs, but about redefining them into a partnership between humans and AI.
This shift has profound implications for how businesses are found online.
The Evolution from SEO to AEO. The discipline of being found online isn't disappearing; it's evolving. I believe traditional Search Engine Optimization (SEO) will transform into Agent Engine Optimization (AEO) or Generative Engine Optimization (GEO). The focus will shift from human-read keywords to making content perfectly parsable and trustworthy for AI agents.
For a headless CMS like ButterCMS, this is a massive opportunity. The core value of a headless CMS- separating content from presentation - is precisely what's needed. It allows you to serve the same structured content to both the human-facing Experience Layer and the agent-facing Infrastructure Layer seamlessly.
The Coordination Economy (2027-2028)
As agents become a core part of the workforce, the focus will shift to multi-agent coordination. Google's research shows that while uncoordinated agents can amplify errors by 17.2x, a centrally orchestrated system contains that to a manageable 4.4x [5].
This could reshape the modern corporation. It's plausible that a lean, 50-person company orchestrating 500 highly coordinated agents could accomplish more than a 5,000-person legacy competitor. Roles will evolve. A "Marketing Manager" may become a "Marketing Orchestrator."
This could also give rise to a new economy: agent-to-agent commerce, where your purchasing agent negotiates with a vendor's sales agent in milliseconds.
The Semantic Layer (2028-2029)
Platforms like OpenAI Frontier are designed to create a "semantic layer for the enterprise" [4]. As this becomes standard, I expect information silos will begin to dissolve, increasing decision-making speed by orders of magnitude.

In such a world, competitive moats based on process efficiency will likely shrink. The most sustainable advantages, in my view, will be unique data, unique relationships, and unique creative vision.

Everyone keeps asking "Will AI replace us?" I think that's the wrong question. The better one: what will we actually do with this much leverage?
